Tpack and Samr Model

We come across new teaching ways every day which proves that education is a living thing and still in development to suit the age. Since we are in the age of technology, new generations are born into every technological device and that creates a bond between technology and new generations. Now, Thanks to technology we can do many things in education.

Tpack

Tpack supports applications, websites, computers to make the learning process more beneficial and understandable. Tpack model wants students to engage in technology. These are important in Tpack model: what do your teachers know about, how to use technology in class, and the way of teaching. Tpack actually consists of 3 models and these are:

Content Knowledge:

This is an important part because content knowledge includes teacher's knowledge about the topic. Every level's content knowledge is different for example in middle school you don’t need a detailed explanation of maths but in University you need to go into the details. Teachers can show evidence of something, theories about something, approaches, and successful examples of the subject matter.

Pedagogical Knowledge:

Pedagogical knowledge is about how to transmit your knowledge to your students and also about teacher's knowledge about teaching methods. I mentioned a lot about lesson plans in my blog because as teacher candidates it is important to us and what pedagogical knowledge supports is a lesson plan, learning styles, and classroom management.

Technological Knowledge:

Technological knowledge is about the use of technological devices in the classroom, for example, smart boards, projectors, use of web 2.0 tools. The main aim of this model is to implement technological devices into education and make use of them in your lessons.

Samr

Samr is a model that supports deeper learning with computer technology and reaching the places which we couldn’t in the past and integrating computers into education to make students understand more.

There are 4 steps:

Redefinition:

As it can be seen from method’s name, in Redefinition method students are expected to use new technologies, computers to complete their tasks but it is not expected to do something different. The aim is to achieve things that were not even possible in the past, for example, using cloud systems.

Modification:

Thanks to the constant use of technological devices in education now student’s traditional habits are different. Instead of just writing something, now students compare it with many other writings, discuss that with their friends. Teachers are now able to track their student's process via websites like Moodle. Modification is more like abandoning traditional habits and integrating new ones into education.

Augmentation:

Augmentation simply aims to improve the classroom materials. Instead of blackboards, quizzes, paper, and pencil we can use smartboards, Socrative for quizzes, and word document files. Augmentation both aims to improve materials and make things easy for students. The content of the lessons are still the same but in order to catch up with the age, the materials of education must be improved.

Substution:

Instead of previous tools, students should use digital tools to make the learning process more time-efficient and beneficial. The content is still the same but the delivery method of students is different. For example, taking an exam in Socrative and sending your score to your teacher.
